The legal form a business takes — ehf., hf., sf., slf. and others.

The legal form decides who is liable for a company's obligations, what it has to file, and what the register publishes about it. In Iceland the most common is the private limited company (einkahlutafélag, ehf.), where the owners' liability is limited to what they put in.

The forms the register records, most common first: ehf. — einkahlutafélag, private limited company. The most common form.; hf. — hlutafélag, public limited company; sf. — sameignarfélag, general partnership; slf. — samlagsfélag, limited partnership; slhf. — samlagshlutafélag, partnership limited by shares; svf. — samvinnufélag, cooperative society; ses. — sjálfseignarstofnun, self-owned institution.
